Research: The World Ends With You

Another video game, again on Creative Uncut.
This one is from Japan, and you can really tell. Not just from the location (yup, the game is set in that famous city of Shibuya), but the art style too.
It's a pretty bold art style too, really bold, heavy line work. However, in contrast the colour work on the characters is quite muted and dull. Let's have an example:
So the character do wear particularly bright, vibrant colours; reds, pinks, purples. But the colours have been toned down and muted. Perhaps this is just an effect of the lack of colour in the backgrounds? And some characters seem to be lack colour all together. It makes a pretty interesting juxtaposition with that bold linart. And the lack of colour in the background adds more to this juxtaposition.

It's a pretty bold style, and it's not quite as "generic" as most Japanese video games look.Still, it is intentionally designed to look like Japanese street art. Artist, Tetsuya Nomura stated that he took particular influence from Japanese street art and the culture of Shibuya. I've no doubt most people will look at this and think "Harajuku." It's a lot tamer than that...
